Safe disposal of hazardous waste

Hazardous waste doesn't belong in kerbside bins
Keep our community, workers and environment safe by disposing of hazardous waste safely and responsibly. Dumping waste illegally incurs a penalty. Find out more about illegal dumping of waste and how you can report it.  

Before visiting a Recycling and Waste Centre, please ensure you follow the conditions of disposal detailed below. 

Aerosol cans

Recycling bin 
Ensure aerosol cans are empty before placing in your recycling bin, along with lid and nozzle.

Aerosol spray paint cans or hazardous chemicals in aerosols are not accepted in the kerbside recycling bin.

Agricultural and veterinary product chemical drums

Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre
Commercial users

Before visiting the Recycling and Waste Centre, complete and submit a container cleanliness declaration form from drumMUSTER.

Drums must be empty, cleaned and free from any chemical residue. Notify gatehouse staff upon arrival.

Asbestos and suspected asbestos

Including suspected asbestos, fibre cement sheeting and stone benchtops 

Recycling and Waste Centre
Birkdale, Redland Bay (residential only), Coochiemudlo, Macleay, Russell and North Stradbroke Island

  • Up to 10m2 or 175kg per load
  • Double wrapped in thick (0.2mm) plastic sheeting and securely sealed with duct tape
  • Declare at the gatehouse on arrival - it's a legislative requirement
  • Must be hand-unloaded in the designated bin on site

Batteries

Household batteries
Including battery packs, AA, AAA, C, D and button batteries, some lithium batteries

Chemicals and containers

Acids and alkalis, coolants and brake fluids, glue and solvents, herbicides, household chemicals, lubricant grease, pesticides, pool chemicals, rust inhibitors, thinners, wood preservatives

  • Residential only
  • Up to 20 litres/kilograms
  • Ensure chemicals are in original container or approved sealed safe container which isn't broken or leaking. They can't be decanted on site.

EPIRBS and flares

EPIRBS and flares cannot be placed in kerbside bins or taken to a Recycling and Waste Centre.

Residential fuel up to 20L only, must be in a sealed container.

Gas bottles

Recycling and Waste Centre
BBQ gas bottles (only) can be taken to Birkdale, Redland Bay, North Stradbroke Island, Russell Island, Macleay Island and Coochiemudlo Island Recycling and Waste Centres for recycling. If in date, they can be taken to your local service station or most hardware stores for exchange.

Tradeflame / butane gas bottles to be disposed of at Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre as hazardous waste. Residential only. Commercial quantities not accepted.

Return to supplier
All other gas bottles including LPG tanks / oxygen / acetylene / helium are not accepted at Recycling and Waste Centres and should be returned to the supplier where applicable.

Ensure hot ash or heat beads are cold and bagged before placing in your general waste bin.

Never pour any type of oil down the drain, this can cause serious damage and injure marine life.

Paint to be in secured containers of 20L or less and can't be decanted on site. Limit of 100L in total per visit.

Vapes / e-cigarettes

Do not dispose of vapes containing batteries in your kerbside bins

Search Recycle Mate for battery recycling or pharmacy locations
If you can remove a battery, take it to a B-cycle drop-off point and dispose of the vape with no battery in your kerbside bin.

Products that don't have an enclosed battery, such as cartridges, replacement pods and liquid nicotine can be placed in RUM (Return of Unwanted Medicine) bins at your local pharmacy. Check with the pharmacy first.
