Public lighting
Council strives to provide public spaces that are safe, secure and free from the fear of crime.
If an area is attracting crime or disorder, we conduct a safety audit to identify what environmental design modifications can improve safety, including improvements to lighting.
If you have a request or concern regarding lighting, see below to establish who you should contact.
Street lighting
The majority of lights, streetlights and/or poles on road reserves, along footpaths and within parks and foreshore areas are the responsibility of Energex to maintain.

There are (2) two main reasons for the installation of streetlights.
- Street lighting is provided to improve road user safety at night by lighting roads. This is particularly important at high-risk locations such at road intersections, sharp bends, pedestrian crossings, and road islands.
- Provide lighting to footpaths and pedestrians alerting motorists of their presence.
Locations of streetlights that are installed by Council are determined either by technical assessment of an area or by outcome of an investigation.
As part of an investigation for a new streetlight, Council writes to all residents within a 50m radius from where the requested streetlight would be installed.
If the request is considered to be an emergency situation, then these requests are processed without adjoining residents’ approval.
Street light glare
If light from a streetlight is causing significant nuisance to a resident, you may request the installation of a glare shield for Council assessment.
Most streetlights are owned and maintained by Energex. As part of the process, Council must consult with Energex to confirm whether a glare shield can be installed on the existing infrastructure and to identify the most suitable design.
Please note that Energex charges a fee for this assessment, which must be paid by the applicant.
