Notice published 21 May 2026

What is the upcoming public notice about?

Council will soon issue a public notice regarding burial sites at Cleveland Cemetery that were reserved with a deposit more than 25 years ago.

The notice aims to contact the original purchaser—or their heirs, executors or next of kin - to confirm whether they wish to retain or relinquish the burial site.

Why is Council issuing a public notice?

We understand that circumstances, preferences and family needs can evolve over time. Some deposits from the 1970s to 1990s have contact details that are now outdated. A public notice helps ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to reach people before any deposits are withdrawn.

Which burial sites are affected?

Only burial sites in the Cleveland Cemetery that:

  • Were reserved by deposit more than 25 years ago, and
  • Have never been used for a coffin or cremation interment

are included in this process.

No burial sites with existing interments are affected.

Why is this process necessary now?

Cleveland Cemetery currently has no burial sites available for purchase and continues to experience very high demand.

At the same time, Council no longer accepts deposits on burial sites and a right to interment expires after 25 years if not used.

How is Council trying to make contact?

Council is using multiple methods to reach affected families, including:

  • A formal public notice
  •  Signage at Cleveland Cemetery
  • A Council social media campaign

What options are available if I am contacted?

If you hold a deposit on a burial site, you may:

  1. Pay the outstanding balance to finalise the right to interment licence
  2. Withdraw the deposit, with all monies paid refunded in full
  3. Confirm the deposit remains active and update your contact details.  Council will follow up after 12 months to confirm reservations remain current, helping balance community needs with future interment capacity at Cleveland Cemetery.

What happens if Council cannot make contact?

If no response is received within 90 days of the public notice:

  • The deposit will be withdrawn
  • The burial site will be made available for purchase

Any withdrawn deposit will still be refunded in full if a claim is later made.

What happens to burial sites that are released?

Released burial sites will be offered to people on an existing waiting list for Cleveland Cemetery. Families on that list will be contacted separately in due course.  Council will not be taking enquiries from the community to purchase new rights to interments within the Cleveland Cemetery until waiting periods have been undertaken and the existing waiting list has been contacted.

How can I obtain a copy of a historical full interment right?

You can request a copy of a historical full interment right by submitting a request via Cemeteries Enquiry Form. A fee of $16.00 applies to cover document retrieval and processing. Once your request and payment are received, the documents will be provided within 28 days

How can I make a general enquiry or request information about the public notice?

For general enquiries or information regarding the public notice, we kindly ask that you submit your enquiry via email where possible, due to the high volume of enquiries we receive.
