The Local Government Act 2009 (Section 12) outlines the responsibilities of Councillors. Councillors represent the interests of residents of the area, ensure Council delivers on its plans and complies with legislation, and provide quality leadership for the community. They participate in meetings, policy development and decision-making for the benefit of the local community.
The Mayor has additional responsibilities including leading meetings, preparing the budget, providing strategic direction to Council’s Chief Executive Officer. When performing their responsibilities, Councillors must serve the overall public interest of the whole local government area.
