You can order bins for a new property or additional bins for your household needs. 

The standard bin set is a 240-litre general waste bin and a 240-litre recycling bin. The establishment fee for a new standard bin set is $30 and is charged on the rates notice.

Households can choose different combinations* of bin sizes and have more than one general waste and recycling bin.

• General waste bins are available in 140 and 240-litre sizes
• Recycling bins are available in 140, 240 and 340-litre sizes. Additional recycling bins are available in 240 and 340-litre sizes.

*Each extra bin incurs an establishment fee and an annual charge. Your recycling bin size must be equal to or greater than the size of your general waste bin.

Property owners can request new or additional bins and change bin sizes online or by contacting Customer Service

• Place your bin out the night before your collection day as collections start from 6am
• Bring your bins back onto your property as soon as practical after collection.
• Place your bins at least 50cm apart so the truck can safely collect them.
• Place them on the kerbside, away from obstructions such as cars, power poles and trees
• Don’t overfill or place heavy items in your bins. Trucks can only lift bins up to 70kg. Make sure the bin lid can close. If you have excess or heavy waste visit your local Recycling and Waste Centre.
• Only place acceptable items in your bins The wrong items can contaminate loads or create safety risks.

Be mindful of bin day
If you live in a cul-de-sac, please keep the turnaround area clear on collection day so waste trucks can safely access bins and turn around.

• Paper and cardboard
  Printed paper, magazines, eggs cartons, toilet rolls, cereal and pizza boxes, milk and juice cartons, wrapping paper, newspapers, cardboard boxes

  Flatten large cardboard packaging so it can fit in your recycling bin and be emptied by the recycling truck.

•  Glass bottles and jars
  Empty drink and oil bottles, jam and sauce jars
  Keep lids on. A small amount of residue is ok.

• Hard plastic containers
  

  Empty milk and juice bottles, shampoo and conditioner bottles, detergent, cleaning spray and soap bottles, ice cream and yoghurt tubs, fruit punnets
  Keep lids on

• Steel tins
  

  Empty food and pet food tins
  You can wipe out oil to keep your bin clean and remember a small amount of residue is ok.

• Aluminium cans, trays and foil
  Drink cans, empty aerosols, pie trays, foil scrunched in a fist-sized ball

• Soft plastic bags, packets and wrappers
  Place in your general waste bin or recycle through speciality programs. Search Recycle Mate for locations.
• General waste
  General waste only goes in your red-lid waste bin. If you need more bin space, order an additional general waste bin and keep recycling out of landfill.
• Recyclables in bags or boxes
  Empty recyclables loose into your recycling bin. Plastic and paper bags aren't emptied through the sorting process.
• Non-recyclable plastics, like toys and toothbrushes
  Other non-recyclable plastics include laundry baskets, buckets, hoses, plastic coat hangers and Tupperware containers. Place broken items in your general waste bin.
• Clothing and textiles
  Donate reusable items to charity, drop off textiles to Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre or place unwearable items in your general waste bin.
• Food or garden waste
  Use a home compost or worm farm, a green bin for garden waste or take garden waste to a Recycling and Waste Centre.
• Electronic and electrical items
  Take to a Recycling and Waste Centre
• Glassware (broken wine glasses, mirror)
  Place in your general waste bin.

Property owners can submit a request to order a green bin online or change bin sizes online or by contacting Customer Service.

Tenants can ask their landlord or property manager to order a green bin or change bin sizes on their behalf. 

Green bins are only available to mainland residents.

If you are unable to physically move your bin due to a disability or impairment and have no-one to assist you, you can apply for assistance. The collection driver can take your bins out to the kerbside and return them to an agreed location on your property. There is no additional cost for this service. The service is subject to a site assessment and subject to change. 

To apply, print and complete the assistance with waste bins application form and submit by post or in-person to a Customer Service Centre.

Cleaning and general upkeep of council-supplied kerbside bins is the responsibility of the resident. Do not paint, deface or stick anything on your bins. 

If a bin is damaged or needs repairing, submit a request online or Contact Council.

Some unit complexes and multiple dwellings are provided with bulk bins for both waste and recycling. Provision of bulk bins depends on a complex’s development approvals and is dependent on property access. Charges are normally included on a body corporate’s rate notice. You can find bulk bin charges in the Redland City Council Utility Charges(PDF, 364KB). To enquire about what’s been approved for your building or complex, please contact Council.

No, in Queensland, waste and recycling bins are required by law as part of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act, 2011. To meet the requirements of this act, Redland City Council must have a minimum service of one waste and one recycling bin for a domestic residence.

This Act contains a suite of measures to reduce waste generation and landfill disposal and to encourage recycling.

If you have signed up for the optional green waste bin service or any additional bin services, you can cancel these at any time by contacting Customer Service. Cancellation fees may apply.

If you see someone going through yours or other bins on the kerbside or around the city, it’s likely they’re looking for eligible containers under the Container Refund Scheme. This state government scheme works as an incentive to increase recycling and reduce litter in Queensland.

Under the Environmental Protection Regulation (2019), people are not permitted to disturb or otherwise interfere with the contents of a waste container.

This means that commercial bins, community bins or household wheelie bins (even once they are on the kerbside) must not be disturbed unless it's your own rubbish and may only be handled by Council's recycling collection contractor.

There are privacy, safety and litter concerns around going through bins. We encourage all residents to use official container exchange points and donation chutes.

You can also leave eligible containers on Container Exchange Point racks attached to some exist park bins. This enables others to collect and redeem them.

No, please leave your Council provided kerbside bins at the property. Bins are allocated to each property, not the resident.
