Waste strategy targets
Reducing waste and increasing recycling are important steps towards protecting Redlands Coast’s naturally wonderful environment and maintaining the lifestyle our community enjoys.
Guided by sustainable waste management principles, the plan focuses on:
- reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill
- increasing recycling
- recovering valuable resources from household waste.
What influenced the plan?
The plan was developed in consultation with the community and reflects significant changes across the waste and recycling sector, including:
Together, these factors have helped shape a practical plan for the future of waste and recycling on Redlands Coast.
Supporting Queensland's 2030 Targets
The plan demonstrates Council’s commitment to the Queensland Government’s waste reduction and recycling targets.
By 2030, Queensland aims to:
- reduce the amount of waste generated per person by 15%
- increase resource recovery and recycling to 60%.
Four priority areas
To help achieve these targets, the plan focuses on four themes for action:
1. Use the right bin
- reduce recycling, food waste and green waste in the red-lid bin
- reduce contamination in the yellow-lid bin
2. Reduce green waste and food waste lost to landfill
- increase recovery options of green waste and food waste
- reduce generation of food waste
3. Reduce waste
- waste avoidance, reduction and reuse
4. Provide effective services
Plan, collaborate and respond to industry and community needs to ensure waste and recycling services are cost-effective, fit-for-purpose and provide a great user experience.
These priorities focus on the largest waste streams, align with regional and state initiatives, and support long-term improvements while keeping services practical and cost effective.
