Cleveland Cemetery

Rich in history, Cleveland Cemetery, bounded by Clark, Coburg Street West, Russell, and Wellington Streets, was given to Council in 1927. Originally opened in the 1890s, it replaced a smaller burial ground near present-day Lisa Street.

The cemetery features a variety of sections, including the Pioneers’ section, Catholic and Protestant monumental burial areas, lawn burial areas, cremation memorial rock gardens, and traditional columbarium and marble wall niches. The pleasant grounds are frequently visited by tour groups, schools, and university students researching the historical graves of the many pioneers buried here.

Ashes interment options are available and vary depending on the site. We have locations in the Wellington Street Memorial Rock Garden, Columbarium Cremation Walls, Randall Memorial Garden Niche Walls, and Lychgate Niche Walls, offering single and double cremation ash interment sites. Our newly established Eco Scatter Garden provides a natural cremation option, where cremated remains are poured directly into the earth, bypassing the typical PVC capsule provided by the crematorium.

Cremation ashes sites can be pre-paid, or ashes can be buried within an existing grave.

Burials

Lawn Allotment sites

Cleveland Cemetery has two lawn burial sections along Russell Street and our new Clark Street Lawn burial allotments. All lawn burial allotments are now reserved. Cremated remains can be interred into burial allotments. Pre-payment of burial (interment) fees is not currently available.

Monumental Allotment sites

All monumental burial allotments are now reserved. Monumental sites may also include:

• above-ground vault (subject to Council approval)
• underground concrete vault (subject to Council approval)
• cremation remains burial.

Pre-payment of burial (interment) fees is not currently available.

Headstones and monumental work

You have a choice of either headstone or lawn plaque placed at a lawn burial site. Monuments are to be built on designated monumental sites only. All headstones and monuments must comply with Australian Standard AS 4204-1994 Headstone and Cemetery Monuments.

Contact a stonemason to arrange a headstone or monument and to submit a plan of the proposed works to Council for approval with the relevant permit application fee.

Council can arrange cast bronze lawn plaques affixed to your choice of base on request (conditions and fees apply).

Cremation options

Randall Memorial walls

The Randall Memorial Garden has recently undergone a complete transformation with elegant white marble wall niches set in a quartz garden setting. One set of cremation ashes may be interred into each niche, and a cast bronze memorial plaque affixed to the granite cover is included with every ash interment.

Columbarium walls

Cremation ashes in our traditional columbarium brick walls are interred in a single or double niche. A memorial plaque is included in the ash interment to cover the niche opening and is available to order through Council.

Lychgate niche walls

Our Lychgate with niche walls offers a choice of elegant single or double white marble cremation niches. Cast bronze memorial plaques are included with the interment of ashes and is available through Council.

All niches can be reserved in advance. Pre-payment of ash interment fees is currently not available.

Wellington Street Memorial Rock Garden

The Wellington Street Memorial Rock Garden offers up to two ash cremation interments with a cast bronze memorial plaque affixed to a natural rock or sandstone block.

Eco Scatter Garden

Our newly established Eco Scatter Garden provides a natural cremation option, where cremated remains are poured directly into the earth, bypassing the typical PVC capsule provided by the crematorium.

Redland Bay Cemetery

Originally known as North Redland Cemetery, today’s Redland Bay Cemetery, located on Gordon Road, Redland Bay, hosted its first funeral in 1908. Since then, generations of families from the Redlands Coast have chosen to be remembered here through burials or cremation memorials in this peaceful, rural-style cemetery.

The cemetery offers a range of options, including lawn beam, and monumental sites for burials, as well as ashes memorial sites for the placement of cremated remains.

Our packaged lawn burial interments include complimentary bronze plaques set on elegant granite bases. If you prefer a more personal memorial, headstone-only interment sites are also available.

Monumental sections allow for in-ground burials, with the opportunity to install a permanent headstone and improvement to the site surface by a qualified stonemason. An adult lawn beam or monumental site may accommodate up to three burials, subject to access, coffin or casket size, and environmental site considerations.

In this serene setting, you may be lucky enough to see some of our frequent visitors, including wallabies, native birds, and koalas resting among the many varieties of gum trees throughout the cemetery. An accessible restroom is conveniently located near the car park.

Burials

Allotment sites

Redland Bay Cemetery has two standard allotment sizes offered for burials in our newly established monumental section and two lawn burial areas:

• 1.8m deep grave (accommodates two adults)
• 2.1m deep grave (accommodates three adults – additional fee and conditions apply).

Sites can be purchased for future use (pre-need) or for immediate use (at need) and may also include ash burial.

Headstones and monumental work

You may have a headstone or monumental work constructed on allotments located in designated monumental sites and headstone lawn areas. Monumental work is strictly allowed only in these designated areas, and all headstones and monuments must comply with Australian Standard AS 4204-1994 for Headstones and Cemetery Monuments.

To arrange a headstone or monument, contact a stonemason who will assist with submitting a plan of the proposed works to the Council for approval, along with the necessary permit application fee.

NOTE: Redland City Council requires all monumental stonemasons, builders, and contractors to complete a contractor registration form before the acceptance of any permit application for monument work. It is the responsibility of the burial rights holder to ensure that their selected stonemason is duly authorised to perform work within Council-controlled cemeteries. To avoid engaging an unauthorised contractor, burial rights holders should verify the approval of their chosen stonemason before making any deposits. The Council maintains strict criteria for the approval of contractors permitted to work within its cemeteries.

Packaged lawn burial sites

Our Lawn Package Burial Section in Lawn 3 provides a beautifully designed lawn plaque affixed to an elegant granite base, included with a coffin interment (one plaque per allotment site). This thoughtful and respectful package ensures a lasting tribute in a serene and well-maintained setting. Cremation options

Memorial Circle Garden

The Memorial Circle Garden has provision for single or double ash capacity. The memorial pillars are set amongst aromatic garden beds of rosemary and fragrant gardenia ground cover. Cast bronze memorial plaques, provided by Council, are placed on timeless sandstone memorial pillars. The gardens are maintained free of any additional maintenance fee. The Tuckeroo tree provides dappled shade for visitors to enjoy spending time remembering family and friends.

Naturally Wonderful Eco Scatter Garden

Set amidst a variety of native koala habitat trees, ‘Naturally Wonderful’ offers a peaceful and serene setting to grieve, reflect, and honor your loved one. This area embraces vital conservation values, ensuring it provides the most natural cremation interment possible. In ‘Naturally Wonderful’, cremated remains are directly poured into the earth, bypassing the PVC capsule typically provided by the crematorium.

The memorial trees serve an important purpose in environmental offsetting, contributing to balancing the impacts of development. Sustainable ironbark timber pillars, sourced locally with a durability rating of 1, support the welcoming sign and memorial plaques. The bronze plaques, made primarily from recycled materials, are crafted by foundries that focus on lowering their carbon footprint and offer plaque recycling programs.

Individual cremated remains are interred at the base of the chosen tree, with up to 10 interments allowed per tree. Each interment is commemorated by an individual plaque placed on a timber pillar near the tree. Cremation interments are conducted monthly by our experienced cemetery officers, ensuring an affordable and respectful service for the community. Alternatively, private witness interment ceremonies can be arranged, subject to additional fees.

The White family were the first ones to inter their loved ones' ashes in the new Eco Scatter Garden in October 2022.

Granite Cremation Garden

Nestled within the tranquil Redland Bay Cemetery, our Granite Cremation Garden provides a dignified resting place for loved ones, enhanced by natural surroundings and timeless materials. Featuring luxurious granite memorial blocks enduring, enduring and exquisitely crafted to honour a life well lived.

Each granite block allotment accommodates two interments, ideal for couples or companions.

Dunwich Cemetery

Our historic Dunwich Cemetery is a fascinating and special place for many generations. Originally used by the Benevolent Society who set up on North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah in the 1860s as a residential care facility, the cemetery came to Councils’ control in the 1970s. There are many thousands of interments from the Benevolent Asylum days across the grounds. Currently there are no unallocated earth burial allotments on this historic location, however we have cremation memorial niche wall sites available. We also provide memorialisation for the unmarked Benevolent Asylum interments with an inscribed plaque on the special Benevolent Asylum Memorial Wall. Fashioned from some of the bricks of the original Benevolent Society buildings, this wall features memorial plaques for those who spent time in the care of the society or who are interred in the cemetery.

Dunwich Cemetery offers lawn cemetery burials and standard burial plots – with or without monumental memorialisation. The standard grave size offered for burials is 1.8m deep and accommodates two adults. Sites may include cremation ash burials.

All monumental and lawn burial plots are now reserved and Council is unable to take reservations at the Dunwich Cemetery at this time.

Cremation remains may be interred in one of the traditional columbarium walls in a single niche. A memorial plaque to cover the niche opening is available to order through Council. Families may request to be present for the interment of ashes in columbarium walls. Cremation niches can be reserved in advance. Pre-payment of ash interment fees is not currently available.

Memorial Rock Garden

Cremation ashes can be scattered or buried beneath memorial rocks in the garden areas of the cemetery grounds. Memorial plaques are affixed to the rocks provided by Council and included with an ash interment.

All cremation sites in the Memorial Rock Gardens are now reserved and Council is unable to take reservations at this time. Pre-payment of ash interment fees is not currently available.

Benevolent Asylum Memorial Wall

The memorial wall, made from bricks that were once used in the Dunwich Benevolent Society laundry, commemorates many of the 8426 people who died as asylum inmates. Most of them lie in unmarked graves within the cemetery. Council can arrange memorial plaques to be placed on the wall in memory of those inmates who passed away while infirmed at the asylum. Bay Island Memorial Garden

The Bay Island Memorial Garden is located on Russell Island and was opened in November 2017. The new picturesque memorial garden is a place for Moreton Bay Island residents to commemorate and remember family and friends in tranquil surroundings. This special cremation garden is located at the edge of the High Street Nature Belt Park, where family and friends’ ashes may be interred and marked on the garden edge with a cast bronze memorial plaque. The garden offers a peaceful, relaxed environment for visitors. It is a place to quietly reflect and remember, surrounded by nature. Cremation sites

Cremation ashes may be interred in the memorial garden. A 120mm x 80mm memorial cast bronze plaque is affixed to the garden edge and is included with every ash interment. Families may request to be present for the interment of ashes into the garden.

Cremation sites can be reserved in advance. Pre-payment of ash interment fees is not currently available.

The original Redland Bay Cemetery, this burial ground is located at 398 Serpentine Creek Road (Route 47) and was active from the 1890s until the late 1940s, when the population of the area migrated north to the main centre near Redland Bay and Cleveland. It is currently inactive. Re-interments from here went to the established (North) Redland Bay Cemetery. The site was managed by "Trustees” from the 1890s until the site was handed to Redland Council in 1977. Currently a natural landscape, the area has previously been used for grazing and timber-felling and of course those early funerals and burials.

It is the responsibility of the burial rights holder to ascertain that their selected monumental stonemason is duly authorised to perform work within Council-controlled cemeteries. To mitigate the risk of engaging a person or business who lacks the requisite authorisation, burial rights holders are advised to verify such approval before remitting any deposit to their preferred contractor. The Council maintains stringent criteria for the approval of contractors permitted to work within its cemeteries.
