Snake safety

Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem and often keep pest species like rodents under control. Most snakes would prefer to avoid humans and if given the space, will retreat during an encounter.

Remember, people are usually bitten by snakes when they are trying to pick them up or kill them, accidentally step on them, or stick their hand somewhere they can’t see. Biting is a defensive behaviour that snakes use when they feel threatened.

To avoid close contact with snakes:

• Snake-proof your home by screening doors and windows and keeping them closed.
• Avoid attracting rodents by keeping your yard tidy and securing food scraps.
• Prevent access to aviaries by using solid materials around the base of the cage or low-gauge wire mesh.
• Be aware of first aid for snake bites and learn how to apply a pressure immobilisation bandage.

Snakes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.
