About Redlands Coast Alerts

Redlands Coast residents are urged to sign up for Council’s free emergency notification messaging service. By signing up to Redlands Coast Alerts, residents can receive:

  • Community alerts – to inform or bring attention to an event/disaster that is likely to significantly impact or disrupt a community, including opening an evacuation centre or place of refuge, or a planned Council burn near your registered location.
  • Flooded road warnings for four local roads – Allan Day Drive, Wellington Point; Avalon Road, Sheldon; Moores Road, Redland Bay; and the corner of Nelson Road and Pitt Road, Wellington Point.
  • Bureau of Meteorology warnings and alerts (by email only).

Redlands Coast Alerts does not replace or duplicate the national Emergency Alert/AusAlert system or other emergency notification services like the Bureau of Meteorology App. It is one of several channels that residents should use to stay informed during emergencies. What can affect alert messages during disasters

SMS Alerts rely on telecommunications networks, which can be disrupted during severe weather or disasters. Power outages, system failures, or impacts to NBN and mobile services may delay or prevent messages from being delivered. Because these systems depend on power and have limited backup, alerts cannot be guaranteed during major incidents. Always keep a battery‑powered radio as a reliable backup source of information.

Road closure alerts are generated using data from flooded‑road gauge stations, which send information at set intervals and rely on telecommunication networks to transmit data. During emergencies, network outages or system failures may delay or prevent road closure notifications from reaching residents. Always follow displayed road closure signs and if it's flooded forget it. Ignoring a closure is an offence, and roads may be closed for multiple hazards - including flooding, fire or other risks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Community Alert?

This subscription option utilises the location residents enter during the registration process, and allows our Local Disaster Management Group to send a targeted email and text message for their area.

Community Alert may only be sent to area’s that are expected to be impacted, such as an island or group of islands, therefore it is important residents enter their address correctly to receive messages.

Why can’t I receive a weather warning text message?

The Bureau of Meteorology issues weather warnings via email, which are then automatically forwarded to subscribers based on their selected location choices.

Why didn’t I receive a weather warning email?

The Weather Warning subscription option issues notification emails only if the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issues a weather warning for Redland City Council local government area or the Southeast Coast forecast district. Some severe weather activity may not reach BoM’s trigger levels, and thus a weather warning is not issued in this instance.

Alternatively, you can download the BOM Weather App to receive push notifications for tropical cyclone, fire weather, flood, tsunami, severe weather, severe thunderstorm warnings to your set location.

Why am I receiving so many weather warning emails?

The Bureau of Meteorology issues weather warnings, which are then automatically forwarded (via email) to subscribers based on their selected location choices, this can be quite a few emails if the Bureau issue several warnings as this is an automatic system.

Another option is to download the BOM Weather App to receive push notifications for your chosen weather warnings such as tropical cyclone, fire weather, flood, tsunami, severe weather, severe thunderstorm warnings to your set location. You can also change your location setting in the app if you go away on holidays or visit another area anywhere in Australia.

What is the difference between ‘Redland City’ and ‘Southeast Coast’ when selecting Weather Warning locations?

Redland City includes all BoM weather warnings where ‘Redland City’ Council area is listed on the BoM warning notification. This includes the individual suburbs of Redland City.

Southeast Coast includes all BoM weather warnings for the district. This is Redland City and surrounding council areas such as Logan, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Scenic Rim, and Sunshine Coast etc. If you work outside of Redland City or would like to know of warnings in surrounding areas, select this option in addition to Redland City.

Note: there will be significantly more emails sent to this option compared to the Redland City selection, as this includes other council areas. You can modify your subscription choice if you are receiving too many emails with the Southeast Coast option.
