Open: Friday 21 May to Sunday 23 May 2021

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre closing?

The Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre will be closed from: Monday 17 May to Thursday 20 May 2021 and Monday 24 May to Thursday 27 May 2021 (inclusive). The Centre will reopen from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 May 2021 inclusive (refer opening times below) and will revert back to normal operations from Friday 28 May 2021 (weather and expected site maintenance work permitting). The temporary closure is for essential site maintenance works to repair a storm water drain which was damaged in recent wet weather events.

When will the Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre reopening?

The reopening date is expected Friday 28 May, however this will be dependent on weather conditions and the amount of site maintenance work that will be required.

Why does it need to close?

This project is being undertaken due to significant damage to a stormwater drain following on from recent heavy rain events. The reconstruction works will stabilise the drain preventing further erosion issues, protect the surrounding infrastructure, improve surface water quality and ensure compliance with the Environmental Authority issued by the QLD Department of Environment and Science. The drain runs parallel to the southern haul road which feeds traffic from the upper resource recovery area to the lower area or exit. The closure is essential due to works occurring in close proximity to the road and is required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of workers.

Where can I take my waste and recycling?

Residents: For residents who are unable to hold onto their waste and recycling during the closure times, Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre will be open.  Alternatively, residents can visit one of the other local government sites listed below (fees will apply).  If you are looking for an easier way to dispose of your green waste, consider Council's green waste bin service*.  For $1.23 per week (charged quarterly on the rates notice), the 240L bin will be delivered within two working days and you can start using the bin straight away.  Best of all, you won't need to load the trailer or wait in a queue at the Recycling and Waste Centre.

*Mainland residents only.

Commercial Operators: Commercial operators are encouraged to use alternative waste disposal centres during the temporary closure of the Birkdale site. These may include:

What waste is not accepted at Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre?

  • Commercial fibro, cement sheeting and asbestos containing material. Redland Bay only accepts residential (up 10m2)
  • Commercial bricks and concrete
  • Commercial mixed waste (C&I) in vehicles greater than 4.5t GCVM
  • Redland Bay only accepts residential waste in vehicles with a gross combination vehicle mass (GCVM) less than 4.5 tonnes. Recyclable material including cardboard and scrap metal is not subject to this limit.

I'm a commercial operator, will the way I'm charged differ at Redland Bay?

The Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre does not have a weighbridge. As per Council’s Register of Fees, commercial mixed waste (in vehicles less than 4.5t GCVM) will be charged by vehicle combination (deemed weight), and green waste is charged by the cubic metre.

Why wasn't this fixed during the closure of the Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre last year?

The damage to these storm water drains was caused by the recent heavy rain events.

Why wasn't I notified or aware of the closure?

A range of communications have been issued regarding this closure including:

  • media releases
  • Council website
  • social media announcements
  • customer service noticeboard messages
  • letters to commercial customers on Council account
  • Council snapshot notice in the Redland City Bulletin
  • signage at the Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre
  • notice to Councillors

I'm a local resident, what can I expect?

The works are expected to occur between 7am to 6pm Monday to Thursday for a period of two weeks from 17 May 2021.

There is minimal disruption expected to local residents as the works are being undertaken in an area on the south east of the site. It is located on the haul road that feeds traffic down the hill to the exit and most of the sound will be heard toward the Judy Holt Sportsfield.

Whilst all efforts are made to keep disruption to local residents to a minimum, the following impacts may occur:

  • a slight increase in maintenance vehicles
  • closure of the Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre (Monday – Thursday)
  • an increase to traffic to the area when the site reopens on Friday through to Sunday

Who can I speak to if I'm concerned about the environmental impacts of the works?

There is minimal environmental impact expected from this works with minimal dust, noise or odour pollution anticipated. It is not expected that any odour will be generated by the works as they will be above the landfill capping layer. However, we’re happy to refer you to our Environmental Management team who can discuss this with you should you have any concerns.
