Project overview:

Over the years, Drake canal's aging fishing platform has been underutilised by recreational fishing  enthusiasts, who have shown a preference for other locations in Raby Bay. Rather than reopen the fishing platform (that had been closed due to safety concerns), a decision was made to enhance other, more popular fishing areas. Among the improvements are improved footpaths, concrete pads, plantings to provide protection from the elements, seating and the removal of the fishing platform.

Proposed works:

The proposed plan encompasses various initiatives aimed at both addressing safety concerns and enriching community amenities:

  • Removal of the existing fishing platform, including decking and piles.
  • Installation of a handrail along the section of pathway adjacent to the platform being removed (for improved safety).
  • Landscaping enhancements, featuring sandstone blocks for seating, beautifying the area.
  • Formalisation of an existing track within Raby Bay Foreshore Park, enhancing recreation and fishing opportunities.
  • Extension of the pathway to connect with the Ross Canal fishing platform to promote their fishing sites.

Benefits:

  • Maximise the use of alternative fishing platform located nearby in Ross Canal.
  • New pathways will be constructed, making Raby Bay Foreshore Park and Ross Canal more accessible for walking.
  • The park will be beautified with additional plantings and seating.
  • Recreational fishing will be made easier by the addition of a concrete pad in Raby Bay Foreshore Park.

Current status:

The project is progressing according to schedule. Updates on the project's timeline, including start date for demolition of the fishing platform and embellishment works, will be added to this page when known.
