Recycling and Waste Centres opening hours and locations

⚠️ Queenslanders are urged to follow the State Government's current health directive.

Council urges residents to avoid generating unnecessary waste. Although our waste facilities remain open, social distancing and safety requirements apply, and limitations on how many people can access the site at any one time are in place.

  • Due to these restrictions, there may be considerable delays. This will result in delays of up to 60 minutes at peak times such as the weekend.
  • Please keep a distance of 1.5 metres from other visitors and staff.
  • No cash payments accepted. Payment via EFT or account only.

Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre will be closed for site maintenance and upgrades from Wednesday 1 July to mid-August 2020 (weather dependent).

Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre located at 761 – 789 German Church Road, Redland Bay will remain open for disposal of residential waste and recyclables as well as commercial waste (limits apply) and recyclables.

Council apologises for the inconvenience that may be caused during the planned closure while we improve services to the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Birkdale Recycling and Waste Centre will be temporarily closed from 1 July to Mid-August 2020. A reopening cannot be announced until closer to the end of the project, due to the nature of the site works taking place.

The approximate time for reopening is mid-August 2020. When a final date is set, an announcement will be made via Council’s website and social media.

Residents: For residents who are unable to hold onto their waste and recycling, you’re able to take it to Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre located at 761 – 789 German Church Road, Redland Bay.

Residents should also consider Council’s fortnightly kerbside green waste wheelie bin collection service. The service costs $64 per annum (20/21), charged quarterly on the rates notice. A green bin can be ordered online or by contacting Council on 3829 8999

Commercial Operators:strong> Commercial operators are encouraged to use alternative waste disposal centres during the temporary closure of the Birkdale site. These may include:

  • Chandler Resource Recovery Centre (Brisbane City Council), Tilley Road, Chandler – vehicles less than 4.5t GCVM
  • Resource Recoveries and Recycling, 706 Mount Cotton Road, Sheldon – does not accept Commercial and Industrial (C&I) waste
  • Carbrook Waste and Recycling Facility (Logan City Council), 1801 Mount Cotton Road, Cornubia – vehicles less than 4.5t GVM

Note: some waste cannot be accepted at Redland Bay. See below question for more detail. Commercial operators are responsible for ensuring they meet waste acceptance criteria at any alternative waste disposal facility.

The following items are not accepted at Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre:

  • Commercial fibro, cement sheeting and asbestos containing material. Redland Bay only accepts residential (up 10m2);
  • Commercial bricks and concrete;
  • Commercial mixed waste (C&I) in vehicles greater than 4.5t GCVM;
  • Redland Bay only accepts residential waste in vehicles with a gross combination vehicle mass (GCVM) less than 4.5 tonnes. Recyclable material including cardboard and scrap metal is not subject to this limit.

The Redland Bay Recycling and Waste Centre does not have a weighbridge. As per Council’s Register of Fees, Commercial Mixed Waste (in vehicles less than 4.5t GCVM) will be charged by vehicle combination (deemed weight), and green waste is charged by the cubic metre.

This closure is to allow Council to undertake asphalt construction to a section of the site. Due to the nature of the site works and to ensure public safety Council is unable to allow public access while construction is underway. The planned works are driven by requirements to meet environmental management and licence obligations from the Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science.

During the July school holidays the Recycling and Waste Centre does not historically experience an increase in demand. Winter is an ideal time for the temporary closure due to reduced amount of green waste and weather conditions including rainfall experienced at this time of year.

A range of communications have been issued regarding this closure including:

  • Media Releases
  • Social media announcements and advertising
  • Messages on the Council Customer Service noticeboards
  • Letters to commercial customers on account
  • Letterbox drops to residents immediately surrounding the facility
  • Information on the Redland City Council website, including the homepage
  • Announcement in the Council snapshot section in the local paper
  • Signage at the Recycling and Waste Centre as well as external digital signs
  • Notice to Councillors

Whilst all efforts are made to keep disruption to local residents to a minimum, the following impacts may occur:

  • Site works will generally occur between 6am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. However, there may be some night and weekend works undertaken during the closure which may cause some noise disruption.
  • There may be an increase in heavy vehicles in the local area delivering material to the site.
  • Dust nuisance will be kept to a minimum through the use of water trucks for dust suppression, and all environmental protection measures will be followed.

Please contact Council on 3829 8999 or via the online form. The Council Health and Environment Team can discuss any concerns you may have with you.
