Current work updates

Have you seen temporary works at a closed landfill and want to know what’s happening? Check the progress updates below.

Location: John Fredericks Park, 144 Old Cleveland Road, Capalaba QLD 4157

Description: Persistent wet weather since early 2024 has led to seepages of potentially leachate-impacted water being identified on-site.

Status: Environmental assessments and drain design have been completed. The site is being closely monitored to assess any emerging risks while Council progresses with procurement for construction works.

Timeline: March 2025 – December 2025 (subject to weather).

Location: John Fredericks Park, 144 Old Cleveland Road, Capalaba QLD 4157

Description: Following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, new areas have been identified with leachate-impacted groundwater seepage. Historical site investigations have confirmed that these areas were impacted by unprecedented, sustained rainfall exceeding 500mm within less than a week. The affected areas are expected to drain naturally and pose minimal risk to site users, provided they avoid the pooling locations.

Status: Affected areas have been secured with bunting and signage to raise awareness and caution site users to avoid the pooled water until it has dried.

Timeline: March 2025 – April 2025 (subject to weather).

Location: Charlie Buckler Memorial Sporting Fields, 16 Terrier Court, Redland Bay QLD 4165

Description: Wet weather has led to seepages of potentially leachate-impacted water alongside the batter near the footpath bridge.

Status: Consultants have been engaged to monitor and assess remediation options. No further seepages are observed following dry weather.

Timeline: 2024/25
