2018 Commonwealth Games

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) was run between 4 - 15 April 2018. The majority of events were held on the Gold Coast with the exception of shooting and track cycling, which were held nearby at Belmont and Chandler.

Queen's Baton Relay

Thousands of Redlanders and those from further afield turned out for a star-studded community celebration on Saturday 31 March 2018 as the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay came to Cleveland ahead of the GC2018.

Organised by Redland City Council, the community celebration included free entertainment headlined by Australian singer Casey Donovan and Brisbane folk rock band The Fergies.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams earlier this week encouraged people to get online to find the best vantage point for the relay, which started at Cleveland Lighthouse and then made its way to Raby Bay Harbour Park where the main celebrations were held.

Hosted by Olympic beach volleyball champion Natalie Cook alongside TV personality and proud Redlander Lincoln Lewis, the event featured cultural displays and demonstrations by Quandamooka traditional owner Matt Burns, weaving workshops, come and try sports and activities including a large trapeze, volleyball, gymnastics and long jump.

This event followed the earlier celebration where more than 1500 people turned out to see the Queen's Baton arrive on North Stradbroke Island in January 2018. Read more about the event and view pictures from the event on the Redland City Council Flickr account.
