Welfare Rights Centre Photographic Prize: Scene and Unseen

Use your artistic talents to raise awareness about poverty and social exclusion in our community. The Welfare Rights Centre is hosting a community awareness campaign where everyone has an opportunity to participate and win $500 cash. There are three prize categories:
  1. Open category – sponsored by Mission Australia (Qld Branch)
  2. Photographers that identify as having a disability
  3. Photographs that have a rural or remote theme

 

People can enter multiple times and across all categories. Digital images need to be uploaded to the website. The competition closes on 12 October 2009.  Examples of photographs are on the Website along with the rules and hints on taking photographs.

Help us keep Queensland aware of poverty so these…... have fun! 

Photographs will be displayed at the Brisbane Town Hall and winners will be announced at an event to be held during Anti Poverty Week 2009

Exhibition at The Old Schoolhouse Gallery

'The Painter, The Sculptor... A New Perspective' exhibition will showcase new works by painter Lorraine Doheny and woodcarver-sculptor Gary Field, featuring traditional paintings and fine timber functional forms and sculptures. Meet the artists at the official opening by Councillor Debra Henry at 7pm 4 September.

RedFest

Redland's Strawberry Festival has grown into a cultural feast of vibrant music - RedFest. Five music venues come alive with jazz, folk, country, contemporary and pop music. Kids love the famous strawberry eating competition, fireworks, lantern parade, side show alley, market stalls, and street entertainment. Entertainers will include The Drifters, Scared Weird Little Guys, Mental as Anything, The Black Sorrows, Perch Creek Family Jug Band and Pirate Brides. RedFest is South East Queensland's best value for money event and is situated just minutes away from beautiful Moreton Bay, the gateway to North Stradbroke Island and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

So You Think You Can Perform?

Redland Rhapsody Chorus are holding a community Talent Challenge entitled 'So You Think You Can Perform'. We invite all age groups and all performance styles, singers, dancers, musicians, soloists or ensembles of every age group to take part. Entries for the Heats (held in October) close on 25 September. Historic Production on Straddie By Bay Players Theatre Group

The Castle of Andalusia is a rollicking farce, presented by The Bay Players on North Stradbroke Island Friday 4th September and Saturday 5th September. Performed by convicts at the Norfolk Island mess hall in 1849, it is appropriately reprised by (respectable) islanders at the Dunwich Community Hall, once the mess of the Benevolent Institution.
 
The play, recently published by Straddie business Pigface Press (www.pigfacepress.com), is an entertaining comedy of errors, with confusion, romance and music by the Stradbroke Island Singers. Further details of the production, with photo, on www.straddieonline.com

Beneath the Southern Cross

As a special treat, Theatre Genesis will be performing 4 concerts of a montage of Australiana verse and more at the Museum in our beautiful performance space “under the gums”. 3 evening and late Sunday afternoon The Museum is purchasing wireless microphones and amplifiers so all concerts will be loud and clear!

Redland Quilt Extravaganza

The Annual Exhibition of Quilting, Embroidery and Textile Art held at the Redlands Cultural Centre, 2 Middle St Cleveland. Includes a large display of quilts and quilted items by local amateur quilters and creative sewers. Local sewing clubs and traders are also represented. Tighe Cams Hillclimb Series Round 5

This is a motorsport event held at the MG Car Club of Qld's Mt Cotton circuit, Gramzow Rd, Mt Cotton. Six rounds of the series are held at Mt Cotton throughout the year.

Even better than that; it is all free for spectators. Donation boxes are available for those who would like to contribute to the upkeep of the facility. Action starts at 8.30am and finishes at about 4pm.

Disability Action Week - Art exhibition and Community Garden open day

Disability Action Week is a time to celebrate diversity and open new doors to inclusion and access for everyone. Plans are underway for a full week of celebrations across the state.

Redland City Council and Redlands Bayside Disability Services Inc. cordially invite you to attend the official opening of 'Art of Change' on Monday 14 September from 6pm with refreshments and entertainment by Sticky Fingers.
