Waste and recycling

Governments at all levels are confronted with the issue of how to manage the growing pile of waste generated by households, businesses and industry.

It is no longer acceptable to simply dump waste in the ground, rivers or oceans without considering the environmental impacts.

Waste management in Queensland has changed dramatically over the last decade, largely due to the introduction of the Environmental Protection Act 1994.

Landfills have been upgraded to the standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), alternative waste disposal and recycling technologies have been developed, and we now put great focus on educating people and businesses on how to reduce waste.

We operate our landfills, waste transfer stations and collection systems so waste management does not become an environmental or human health problem. We also educate the community on the reduction and safe disposal of waste so this can be achieved.
