Safe disposal
Car body disposal
Car bodies are difficult to handle because of their size and fluid content. To dispose of a car body at a Council waste transfer station, they must be drained of all fluids (including lubricants, brake fluid and coolants).
They must also be accompanied by a signed declaration form available from any waste transfer station or by contacting us.
Disposal on the Bay Islands & North Stradbroke Island
Car bodies are only accepted at island waste transfer stations at six monthly intervals on nominated days throughout the year.
The dates and times of the nominated days are advertised in the local paper and in posters and leaflets distributed on the islands.
Disposal on the mainland
Car bodies, metal boats and caravans are accepted at mainland waste transfer stations during opening hours all year round. Scrap metal is removed from the mainland transfer stations more frequently than the islands.
Asbestos & dead animal disposal
Asbestos and dead animal waste must be handled as a ‘special burial’ (which is the immediate burial of waste). There are also licensing and tracking requirements for these wastes.
Residents requiring this service must contact us at least 24 hours before disposal is required to ensure adequate time to prepare the site.
For health and safety reasons you must double-wrap asbestos waste in low density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic and fully seal. You will be also responsible for physically unloading the waste at the special landfill area.

Transport licensing
All commercial waste transport operators must hold a current licence from the EPA to transport regulated waste such as asbestos.
If you are a resident transporting less than 250 kgs of asbestos, you do not have to be licensed by the EPA as a regulated waste transporter. If you are a resident is transporting more than 250 kgs of asbestos, then contact the EPA on 1800 501 087 or 07 3224 5641 regarding licensing requirements.
Waste tracking
Since 1 July 2001 new waste tracking measures required by the
Environmental Protection (Waste Management) Regulation 2000 have been in place. The new law affects wastes such as asbestos and aims to track movements for environmental protection purposes.
Residents generating/transporting more than 250 kgs of trackable waste must complete a waste tracking form for each waste load. Contact the Environ-mental Protection Agency (EPA) on 1800 501 087 or 07 3225 1932 for more information.
