Frequently asked questions

How many times can I renew my items?

You may renew your library items once, giving you a maximum of eight weeks. However, if somebody else has requested that item, you will not be able to renew it. For your convenience, you can renew your items online via Red-e-cat or over the telephone by calling any branch library, as long as they are not overdue.

What if my items are due while I’m sick or away on holiday?

You can either renew your items over the phone, or for extenuating circumstances, speak with staff about extending the due date. If you have an item on request and you will be away, you can ask staff to suspend the request until you return.

How many items may I request at a time?

You may request up to ten items at a time (this includes inter-library loans).

Can I request that the library purchase a particular item?

Yes. If you would like the library to purchase a particular book or item, ask at the Reference/Information Desk.

Can I research my family history?

Yes. Our Local History library is located at the Cleveland branch. The Redland Genealogical Society also visits the Local History Library at the following times:
Tuesdays and Thursdays:     9.30am and 12.30pm
Saturdays:                         12.30-3.30pm

Can I leave my child unsupervised in the library?

No. Unsupervised children can be at risk in any public place, including public libraries. There is a risk that they may leave the library at any time, hurt themselves or be approached by strangers. Libraries are busy public places and open to all and cannot take the responsibility of caring for unsupervised children.

What if the library does not have the books/information/article I need?

We can obtain books and/or articles for you from other libraries through an inter-library loan. To request an item through an inter-library loan, please see the Reference/Information Desk. You may place requests for up to three inter-library loan items at one time. It may take a few days to a few weeks to get the item for you, depending upon where it is located. There is no charge for requesting an inter-library loan.

What is my PIN?

When you join the library you are automatically given a four digit PIN (Personal Identification Number). Your PIN is required when you log on to the library catalogue or make a booking for the Information Technology computers. This is our way of protecting your privacy. Unless you specify otherwise, the PIN will be your postcode. To change your PIN number, log in to Red-e-cat, go to My Account, and click on Profile. You can also change your PIN by asking staff at any branch.
