Animal shelter
Redland City Council maintains an Animal Shelter for the care of lost or stray animals until they are claimed by the owner. If unclaimed, Council makes alternative arrangements.
The Animal Shelter is at the western end of South Street, Thornlands. It operates Monday to Friday from 8.30am and 4.30pm, Saturday morning 9am to noon. It is closed daily from noon to 12.45pm.
The Animal Shelter is managed like a boarding kennel. Animals are kept in clean, hygienic cages and pens. They are kept in separate pens for their own protection, the protection of other animals and the protection of the people caring for them. The animals are fed a balanced diet.
Veterinary aid is provided for any injured dog or cat at the owners’ cost. Council reserves the right to put down any seriously injured, ill or emaciated dogs/cats on humanitarian grounds.
Owners of impounded dogs are given a specific time to reclaim their pet from the Animal Shelter before it is transported to the RSPCA. During this time, Council will contact the owner if the dog is registered. Unregistered dogs with no tag are held for three days and seven days if registered, with a tag attached.
A release fee is charged. Release hours are between 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday-Friday, except between 12 midday and 12.45pm and Saturday morning 9am to 12 midday.
For further inquiries, please contact Council's Animal Management officers during business hours, Mon-Fri on 3829 8665.
