Social infrastructure can be defined as the facilities, services and networks that enhance the social capacities of a community, and can be broadly categorised as:

  • community and cultural spaces and facilities
  • sport and recreation
  • community development
  • health
  • education
  • individual, family and community support.

The aim of the draft Redlands Social Infrastructure Strategy (SIS) process is to:

  • look at the social infrastructure currently available in our city (mainland, North Stradbroke Island, Coochiemudlo Island and Southern Moreton Bay Islands)
  • identify any opportunities and gaps
  • develop a coordinated city-wide approach to meet identified needs over the next 20 years.

The draft SIS has been developed through a coordinated approach involving Council, state and federal governments, non-government agencies and the Redlands community and has been informed through extensive consultation and research, including the Redlands 2030 community plan engagement activities. The strategy will provide for a range of catalyst, city-wide and local projects:

  • Five catalyst projects – projects that provide groundbreaking infrastructure here in the Redlands – from an innovative Indigenous knowledge centre on North Stradbroke Island to a structured community foundations program that will support our organisations and groups to develop capacity and viability.
  • Ten city-wide projects – an extensive program of city-wide projects to address opportunities and issues that apply across the City from schools as community centres, green living hubs and the Redland City Lights program for young people.
  • Twenty-four local projects – projects that meet critical gaps for services, networks or facilities at a local level.

Beyond these identified projects, Council will continue to respond to funding or partnership opportunities as they arise and adjust priorities based on shifts in policy or community demand. Over the next 12 months, Council will develop a detailed Implementation Plan for the Social Infrastructure Strategy.
