Don’t forget the next Redlands Youth Network meeting is a site visit – we will be hosted by the lovely ladies at InSync Youth Services, which is located at Shop 4, Kyling Corner (Cnr Middle & Waterloo Streets) in Cleveland. Mental Health Week
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1 in 4 Australians will have some contact with mental illness either directly or indirectly during their lives. During Mental Health Week (5-11 October), Father Jim Smith, Chaplain Director of Catholic Psychiatric Pastoral Care will give a talk about this growing problem.

Youth issues in the Redlands
Community think-tank, the Redlands Institute, is running a survey to help identify issues relating to the city's youth. Survey results will drive planning for Redlands Youth Futures Forum, a special summit to debate issues relating to the future of young people (aged 0-25).

Grants & Funding
Funds for fuel & more
The Federal Government’s Volunteer Grants Program can now provide up to $2500 to help not-for-profit organisations pay for their volunteers' petrol bills. Grants of between $1000 and $5000 may also be used to purchase items such as computers, tools, air conditioners and sporting equipment. Grants of up to $10 000 are being offered to fund one-off hepatitis health promotion initiatives or activities by community groups and organisations. Applications close Wednesday 12 November. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund has grants of up to $30 000 to support community groups with costs such as equipment, one-off events and activities, community and/or organisational development, motor vehicles and minor capital works. According to a 2005 report, there were more than 100 000 young Queenslanders (aged 0-25) who were restricted as a result of a disability. The Youth Affairs Network of Queensland (YANQ) is keen to establish an advocacy service for young people with disabilities. Your support, advice and comments are all welcome! Safer Sex
The Safer Sex project is a joint project of the Australian Drug Foundation and the Youth Substance Abuse Service, which aims to empower young people to attain and maintain the highest possible standard of sexual health. At the Safer Sex website, young people will find:
- Information about contraception, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health.
- An anonymous and professional Q&A service that provides clear, unbiased, non-judgemental answers to any questions they may have about sexual health.
- A safe space to share their stories and experiences.
- A searchable database of Australian youth-friendly health services and organisations.
- The ability to sign-up for free sexual health SMSs.

Mental health experiences
The Queensland Alliance is holding a forum in Brisbane on 13 & 14 November, run for and by people with lived experience with mental illness. Expressions of interest are invited from:
- Performers and entertainers whether in dance, story, poetry, music or comedy, with lived experience;
- Facilitators, artists, speakers, peer developers, creative thinkers, advocates, or storytellers with lived experience to share their ideas, projects, workshops and activities (timeslots up to 2 hours).
