TravelSmart Schools
TravelSmart Schools is a voluntary travel behaviour change program for primary schools encouraging more sustainable modes of travel (walking, cycling, public transport and car pooling).
It would come as no surprise that today, the majority of students are driven to and from school by car. As a result, many schools struggle with traffic congestion around schools.
The TravelSmart program aims to address this.
Not only does TravelSmart reduce traffic congestion, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps people change the way they travel, saving them time, money, improving their health and the environment.
TravelSmart achieves this through the use of a suite of behaviour change activities such as:
- 'Park, walk and ride'
- Bike education
- Ride to school days
- Bus education
- Carpooling trivia nights
Students can track their progress on their TravelSmart passport, earn rewards and classes work towards the Green Boot award!
What does the program involve?
The TravelSmart Schools program is based around the development and implementation of a school travel plan, which requires the school community to implement active travel activities to address specific issues. Merchandise is provided to support the program (e.g. drink bottles, backpacks, stationery), and before and after travel surveys are conducted. The program commences with the development of the school travel plan in term 1, and activities are undertaken throughout terms 2, 3 and 4.
Who runs the program?
The program is delivered by school community and Council. The Department of Transport and Main roads provides support and information about the program. For further information, contact Council on ph 3829 8999.
