Medicines
Any expired or left over medications can be returned to any pharmacy for appropriate disposal.
Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) project is a national scheme for out-of-date and unwanted medicines. This scheme urges Australians to discard their medicines in a responsible manner. The returned medicines are then disposed of safely. They are in no way reused or recycled.
You can take your out-of-date and unwanted medicines to any pharmacy in Australia. All pharmacies are equipped to accept all medicines.
The National Return & Disposal of Unwanted Medicines Limited (ABN 79 082 871 663), is a national not-for-profit company, registered specifically for this purpose.
Known as the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) Project, the national scheme provides for unwanted and out-of-date medicines to be collected by community pharmacies from consumers. The medicines are then disposed of by high temperature incineration, which is the EPA approved method of disposal.
Metal
Scrap metal can be taken to all Council Waste Transfer Stations free of charge.
Scrap metals include a number of materials such as aluminium, brass, copper, stainless steel, cast iron, lead zinc and nickel. Recycling scrap metal contributes to a significant saving in greenhouse gas emissions. Making Items for recycled aluminium uses just 5% of the energy as making the same item from raw material.
Milk cartons
You can recycle your milk cartons in your yellow lid recycle bin. Milk cartons are made up of a mixture of paper, aluminium and plastic and have plenty of life left in them yet.
Mobile phones batteries and accessories
Don't let mobiles go to landfill or gather dust in a drawer! Help address the e-waste epidemic by recycling your used mobile phones and accessories. Simply drop them into a participating location.
Mobile Phones and mobile batteries cannot be recycled in your council recycling bins. There are a number of mobile phone recycling programs that you can get involved in that will help to protect our environment and conserve our natural resources. Mobile Muster provides for the collection of mobile phones and associated products. The purchase of new mobile phones is provided with a mobile muster bag to dispose and post of old phones.
