New state waste levy charges
The Queensland Government's new commercial and industrial waste levy of $35 a tonne (excluding GST) came into force across Queensland on 1 December this year, following the passing of legislation on the 28 October 2011.
Redland City Council is now required to pass on the State Government waste levy for all commercial and industrial (C&I), construction and demolition (C&D), and regulated waste disposed of at its waste facilities.
Commercial customers needing information about the state waste levy should contact the state government on (07) 1374 68 or visit the environmental management (waste) page on the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s website: www.derm.qld.gov.au
Council will be advising a new schedule of charges in January for commercial customers using its kerbside collection.
Queensland's tough new litter laws
Queenslanders who disregard the state's new waste laws by illegally dumping their rubbish in parks and creeks or throwing litter from vehicles can expect to be dobbed in on-line and hit with significant penalties.
Anyone who witnesses a person littering or illegally dumping waste from a vehicle, trailer or vessel can record the details of the incident and submit a report online through the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM).
Infringement notices from $300 up to $3,000 can be issued for all littering and from $4,000 to $16,500 for illegal dumping.
Information about the new scheme and details on how to report a littering or illegal dumping is available online at
www.derm.qld.gov.au/waste.
