Business as usual at Birkdale Waste Transfer Station
Redland residents can still bring their residential waste and recyclables to the Birkdale Waste Transfer Station – even though landfill operations officially wind down from 30 September.
It’s business as usual for locals who can continue to bring residential loads of mixed waste, household recyclables, green waste, scrap metal, building and construction material and small quantities of asbestos to the transfer station. However, the facility will no longer be used to dispose of fire ant material or contaminated soil and will no longer be able to provide special burials for large animals.
Commercial operators can continue to bring their green waste and untreated timber, and scrap metal to Birkdale Transfer Station.
Council will continue to operate its Giles Road Hardfill for larger, commercial quantities of hardfill which is open on Monday and Tuesday from 8:00am- 5:00pm.
Residents in vehicles up to 4.5 tonne can still reuse and recycle the following items for free at Birkdale and Redland Bay Waste Transfer Stations:
• clean, uncontaminated cover soil
• car batteries
• fridges and freezers
• gas bottles
• paper/cardboard
• polystyrene
• household recyclables
• RecycleWorld items (reusable household items)
• road pad base
• scrap metal
• waste motor and vegetable oil
If a residential load has 50% or more of recyclable items (sorted separately and clearly identifiable from other waste), disposal is also free.
Closing the Birkdale landfill site is part of Council’s recently adopted Sustainable Resources from Waste Plan 2010-2020 – the city’s new 10-year waste management strategy – with the goal to increase waste recovery from 32% to 65% by 2020.
Redland City Council will save a whopping $50million over the next decade under an agreement with Brisbane City Council to transfer waste to a site outside the region for processing.
Earthworks will continue operating at Birkdale in preparation for the capping and rehabilitation of the landfill over the coming years. The closure of the site is expected to lessen odour.
