Littering

In the Redlands, penalties apply to people who litter and dump waste. Litter includes cigarette butts, plastic bags, polystyrene, marine litter and illegal dumping.
Illegal dumping of rubbish is monitored through Council's complaint management system. Ring Council on ph 3829 8999 to report illegal dumping.
If you witness the incident, please provide as much detail as possible, including the vehicle registration number. If the dumping has already occurred, ring us so we can organise a clean up.
Reporting such incidents helps us monitor illegal dumping and put in place measures to keep it to a minimum. There are also regular proactive patrols where Council officers address all compliance issues (eg illegal parking, breaches of water restrictions).
- Cigarette butts make up 73 per cent of litter items in the Redlands.
- Toxic chemicals from cigarette butts reduce water quality.
- Cigarette butts harm birdlife, sea turtles and other marine animals.
- Lit cigarette butts can cause bushfires.
- Most of the litter in the Redlands is found on the roadside.
- A significant cause of roadside litter is not having loads secured.
- Parking areas and shopping centres are high litter areas.
- Outdoor dining generates a lot of wind-blown litter.
