Earth Hour

Redland City powers down for Earth Hour

The local community showed their support for Earth Hour resulting in an impressive 14 per cent drop in energy usage in the Redlands, compared to 12 per cent for the rest of south-east Queensland.

An overwhelming number of people joined Earth Hour and the fight against global warming, including 22 businesses and 267 residents who officially signed up for the event.

Between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday 29 March electricity usage was 67 megawatts, compared to the normal usage of 78 megawatts for that period. This saving of 11 megawatts is equal to taking 2,500 cars off the road for 12 months or planting 16,417 trees.

The participation and energy reduction results on the night show that the local community is committed to reducing the threats linked to global warming.

Earth Hour was initiated by WWF-Australia and is a worldwide campaign that aims to get as many people as possible to turn off their lights and appliances for one designated hour as a way of reducing carbon emissions and encouraging people to be more conscious about the use of energy on a daily basis.

The next Earth Hour will be on Saturday 28 March 2009.

What else can I do?

Make small, but long term, energy saving changes such as turning off lights when you leave a room or turning appliances off at the wall.
