Save energy at Council
Redland City Council is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions for the economic, environmental and social development of future generations, and to minimise the impact of the greenhouse effect.
Council joined the Cities for Climate Protection Program (CCP) to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations, as those associated with the Redland’s homes and businesses.
The CCP Program has five milestones
Council has completed its Milestone 5 Report
[PDF 191KB]. Some of the initiatives contributing to improved greenhouse performance at Council include:
- Purchase of 5 per cent accredited Green Power for its four largest buildings
- Install energy saving lighting, water heating and ventilation control improvements in council buildings
- Reduce paper and energy use through the Eco-Office program for Council employees
- Transition to 4 cylinder fleet vehicles from 6-cylinder and use of 10 per cent ethanol blend
- Transition to diesel utility vehicles rather than ULP
- Trial ethanol co-fuel injection system in diesel vehicles
- Reduced electricity use from water pumping attributed to Council and community water saving initiatives
- Flaring, rather than release, of methane at Birkdale landfill and future plans for power generation from this resource
Council will continue to implement measures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
