All about bins

How do I order bins for my new house?

Contact Redland Water and Waste to order a waste and a recycle bin. The bins will be delivered to your home.

Who owns the bins?

Redland City Council owns the bins and residents are responsible for the routine cleaning and care of bins. As the bins are a Council asset, the bins should not be painted or defaced in any way.

What if I move house?

The bins are allocated to each property, not the resident, and must be left at the premises.

What if my bin is stolen or damaged?

Contact Redland Water and Waste and report the problem. Council will arrange for the bin to be replaced or repaired at no extra cost, unless the bin is damaged through resident misuse.

Can I have more than one waste or recycling bin?

Yes, but you must put your request in writing to Council, and you will be required to pay the additional annual charge and a ‘one off’ bin establishment fee.

What do I do if my bin is not emptied, especially when other bins in my street have been serviced?

Contact Redland Water and Waste to report a missed service. Please note that Council will not provide a return collection for any of the following reasons:

Where should I keep my waste and recycle bins between collections?

Do not leave your bins on the kerb between collections. The bins should be kept in a shady spot at ground level at the rear alignment of your house.

What time does Council begin their bin rounds?

After 6am on your collection day.

How should I place my bins out on the kerb for collection?

The bins should be placed on the kerbside outside your premises, with the wheels and handle facing the house. A 30cm gap should be left between the bins so that the ‘grab-arm’ mechanism of the collection truck can safely pick up your bins. Position your bins safely away from obstructions such as cars, power poles and trees.

What if I miss my service day?

If you have not placed your bins out for collection on the scheduled service day, Council will not return to service your bin, as this causes great disruption to the servicing schedules of other Redlands residents. You can either wait until the next scheduled collection day or take the materials to your local waste transfer station.

What if I run out of room in my bin?

Your local waste transfer station will accept excess waste and recyclables between collections.

Remember: recyclables can be squashed (eg. milk bottles) to make more room in your recycle bin.

What if my bins don’t empty fully?

There are two common reasons why your bin may not empty fully:

If either of these happen, dislodge the obstruction or bag the greenwaste. You can wait for the next scheduled collection day (as Council will not provide a return service for these reasons) or take the material to your local waste transfer station.

What if my bin is full and the lid won’t close fully?

Remove some of the contents so that the lid can close. The lid should always close fully as it is unsafe to lift the bin with the lid open and waste can spill onto the road.

How do I know what I can put in my bin?

Refer to the Bin Disposal Checklist for a list of some the different items that can be placed in your waste and recycle bins. The sticker on the lid of your recycle bin also provides details of what you can put into it. Contact Redland Water and Waste if your recycle bin sticker requires replacing.
