Smoke nuisance

Burning off

As with most local governments, Council has local laws to ensure fires and smoke don't irritate or annoy others.

Land owners are also required to keep properties free from fire hazards.

If you are planning to light a fire, it's worth checking with the fire brigade/warden and Council to find out whether the proposed burning is prohibited or requires a permit.

Wood-fired heaters

Smoke from wood-fired heaters can cause a nuisance to others, raising pollution levels and cause significant health impacts. Check Environment Australia's website on wood-heaters.

Fire hazard on private property

Under Council's local laws, landowners are responsible for making sure their land meets health and safety standards by not harbouring vermin or pests, or becoming a fire hazard. This also applies to vacant land.
