Councillor Melva E Hobson PSM

Since leaving the Public Service in 2006 Melva, with husband John has re-established Wellington Point House Bed and Breakfast, taking it from 0-80% occupancy in less than 2 years. They were winners of the “best small or home based business” in the 2007 Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Awards.

Melva worked within with state government for 40 years, 25 as a secondary geography teacher and Head of Department, Geography, Social Justice and then Social Science and 15 years in the Public Service. This time included: Queensland Landcare Education Officer, for which she was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Australia Day Honours of 1995; Principal Extension Officer, Community Education and Extension Support (Natural Resources and Mines); and then General Manager, Information & Communication Services (Department of Primary Industries & Fisheries). She also scribes through Hudsons for Commonwealth Government selection panels.

Melva is an active community member. She is Deputy Chair of Redlands Tourism; was a participant at the 2007 Koala summit; and was on the Reference Group for the RSC Community Plan. She is actively involved in the cultural life of the shire though music and is a choir conductor and organist. She is passionate about the Redlands and “waxes eloquently” to guests at the B&B about the natural assets of the Redlands.

While her two boys were at school in another part of SEQ, she served 5 years as both President of the High School P&C and Lay Chair of the local scout group. Melva and John have a simply gorgeous 8 month old granddaughter Shelby.
