Evacuation
Be prepared for evacuation
In some emergencies, the safest action is to stay inside. In other emergencies, it may be necessary to leave a building or evacuate an entire area. The appropriate action depends on the particular hazard causing the emergency. When in any doubt tune into your local radio station, or ABC radio, for information and advice.
- When evacuating a building, it is important to agree in advance on a gathering place at a safe distance. Practice evacuation procedures, including a head count. Large buildings should have evacuation plans in place.
- If you decide or are advised to evacuate the area, leave as early as possible - whilst it is safe to do so. It may be safer to stay with your home, provided you are well prepared.
- Allow for special needs of infants, the aged and people with disabilities.
- Don't forget your pets' needs.
- Have your car under cover, with a full fuel tank, and plan for alternative safe routes.
- Consider what to do with valuables and important documents.
If you decide to leave:
- Turn off power, gas, water; lock doors and windows.
- Take your emergency survival kit with you.
- Listen for emergency warnings and safety advice on radio or television.
- Pay special attention if you hear the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS).
- Let someone know where you are going.
In certain situations, you may be asked to leave your home by the emergency services. If this happens, leave as quickly and calmly as possible and heed all official directions given.
If you are at home and an emergency happens, try to gather:
- A list of useful phone numbers, such as your doctor's and close relatives'.
- Home and car keys.
- Toiletries, sanitary supplies and any regularly prescribed medication.
- A battery radio, with spare batteries.
- A torch with spare batteries, candles and matches.
- A First Aid kit.
- Your mobile phone.
- Cash and credit cards.
- Spare clothes and blankets.
It is always useful to have:
If you have time:
- Turn off electricity, gas and water supplies, unplug appliances and lock all doors and windows.
- See the items listed above for what to take with you.
- And if you leave by car, take bottled water and blankets, and tune into local radio for emergency advice and instructions.
