Cr Murray grew up in Cairns and attended James Cook University (Townsville) and UQ (St Lucia), achieving a BA in 1974, majoring in Geography and History. Later she attained a Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration (GDAE).
Much of Cr Murray’s professional career was spent as a Secondary School Teacher and Administrator, spending 1974-1985 in the Admin team of Cleveland State High School, of which she has very fond memories. She has lived in Birkdale since 1978.
A keen musician as well as sportsperson in the earlier years, Cr Murray enjoyed coaching hockey and producing musicals in several schools.
Cr Murray has three adult children who all attended local schools.
In 1987, Cr Murray joined the Thorneside / Div 10 Progress Association and was President 1992-1993. In 1987, Cr Murray founded the Koala Action Group – Qld Inc – and has worked tirelessly for koala / wildlife conservation ever since.
In 1994, Cr Murray was elected to Council and gained the position of Chairman of Parks & Conservation, and worked rigorously to support the environment of the Redlands as well as family lifestyle. In following years, Cr Murray was Chairman of the Policy Committee (2000-2002), as well as Redland Water and Waste Committee (2004-2006).
Some of the achievements which have occurred during Cr Murray’s time in office include the construction of the many Koala Coast Trails and the Foreshore Parks Upgrade in the Aquatic Paradise / Waterloo Bay area.
She has also helped with the construction of the clubhouses of the Mooroondu Sports Club and the Wynnum/Redlands Canoe Club, and the refurbishment of the Thorneside and Birkdale Halls.
Many parks are now named after valued past and present members of the community, recognising the history of the area, for example, the Willard-Weber Park in Thorneside, and the Jack and Edna Finney Reserve next to the railway station in Thorneside.
A highly motivated, well educated and long serving Councillor, Cr Murray has always been involved in creating an enjoyable area to live in as well as a sustainable community at the local level.
